The Nopoo Trend

What is oily scalp anyway?

Degrease hair:

Yes?

No?

Maybe?

Definition sebum/ fat/ sebum:

“Sebum” is the English word for sebum. “Fat” is another word for tallow. “Sebum” is fat secreted by the glands at the roots of the hair. See illustration.

How do I recognize greasy hair & at what point can you say you have greasy hair?

I would argue: if after the first day of shampooing the hair already looks stringy and the roots quickly become greasy. Strengthless hair that is without fullness.

Indicators of impaired fat production:

  • Quickly greasy after shampooing after day 1 already greasy at the roots
  • The hair quickly looks stringy and weak
  • The scalp may itch and burn in bad cases
  • In some cases, dandruff is present (greasy, sticky dandruff)

What is the function of fat/sebum?

Sebum production puts a protective mantle over the scalp, protects the scalp from drying out and supports the defense against pathogens.

I would say it’s a very contentious issue.

The trend to grease out hair is widespread. Here’s the question I asked myself:

How healthy or helpful is this trend?

I researched: What do you mean by letting hair grease out and what do you expect from it?

It is a method in which you do not wash your hair with shampoo for two weeks. It is said that after these two weeks the scalp should be less oily, because times the glands trained not to produce so much fat (sebum).

Here are a few facts!

Causes that lead to oily scalp:

Hormonal influences, e.g.:

  • Puberty
  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Stress spurs the production of the sebaceous glands

Wrong products, which are not suitable for your scalp& hair:

  • Too aggressive shampoos
  • Shampoos that require too much care
  • Non-water soluble silicones
  • Or even that the shampoo & conditioner have not been properly rinsed after washing hair, leads to oily scalp
  • Incorrect use of care products for hair
  • Going into the hair too often leads to greasy hair (not visible dirt on the hands)
  • Incorrect diet
  • Too many or wrong styling products in the hair

Some head coverings also affect the sebaceous glands, e.g.:

  • Hats, headbands and caps

As we can see, there are some influencing factors that can lead to quickly oily scalp. Personally, I find the trend to grease out hair unnecessary. This can be deduced from the points mentioned above.

My tip to you: Before you decide to let your hair grease out, see if any of the above points apply to you and try to regulate them. Then see if there is any improvement.

Careful

After all, oily hair also harbors dangers that many do not know about. The greasing of the hair can make the scalp sick, but wait… how so? Quite simply, when the scalp is soaked in grease because it is no longer washed, a perfect breeding ground for fungi and bacteria is formed and they can multiply undisturbed on the scalp. The balance of the scalp is severely disturbed and eczema and itchy, burning spots can even form.

My Tip:

eliminate the internal causes! External treatments with shampoos work against existing results. External treatment alone is not sufficient.

External treatment:

  • Healing earth
  • Apple cider vinegar helps restore the pH of the scalp and prevent overproduction (2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in 1 cup of water).
  • Chamomile
  • Black tea
  • Lemon juice
  • Mild moisturizing shampoo
  • Shampoo with jojoba oil
  • Keep fingers out of hair
  • Silicone free shampoos
  • Shampoos with water soluble silicones
  • Shampoos with herbs (they have a calming effect): Chamomile, rosemary, nettle

Internal treatment

  • Reduce stress… Yes I know, easier said than done. BUT: look at what triggers your stress and try to reduce it (I believe small changes can do wonders)!
  • Healthy diet: Poor diet can lead to oily scalp.

Recommendation: If hair is not immediately greasy, they do not need to be washed every day. Really look if it is necessary that the hair is washed every day. And take shampoos that have a low cleansing effect, because they dry out the scalp. Only dirty and stringy hair should be washed and like to use mild products for the scalp. Because a shampoo is actually and exclusively for cleaning the scalp and hair and the care comes afterwards. E.g. conditioner and mask for the lengths. This is very important information! Care comes only in the lengths and tips, not on the scalp! I can’t emphasize that enough. :)

If you still want to grease out your hair

Then please proceed as follows: If you normally wash your hair every day, start washing your hair every other day for the first two weeks and then every three days for the next two weeks.

Example: The initial situation is: You wash your hair every day.

Then you start with: wash every other day for 2 weeks.

Then: The following two weeks wash every three days.

And muy importante: see which of the above factors affect the production of fat and what routine you can change to inhibit the production of sebum . I hope I could help you a little. If you have any questions, feel free to write me.

What else I would like to give you ❤️

Give your scalp time. A noticeable change is usually only apparent after four weeks. The renewal of the cell in the skin is about 28 days. So be patient, sometimes it can take longer than 4 weeks.
